T-Shirt Quilts
CUSTOM T-SHIRT QUILTS FROM CASTLE PATH QUILTING
A T-SHIRT QUILT provides an excellent memento of one’s cherished hobby, sports, travel
or activities and is a great way to preserve the memories associated with your T-shirt
collection.
How Are T-Shirt Quilts made?
The most popular T-shirt quilts consist of T-shirts usually cut into 14 inch squares,
stabilizer to prevent the T-shirt fabric from stretching and tearing, sashing to
join each square and to bring a cohesive color scheme to the quilt, borders to “frame”
the quilt, a cotton backing fabric, and batting to add loft between the quilt top
and backing. Once the T-shirt quilt top is constructed, we use our Gammill longarm
quilting machine to quilt your treasured shirts into a lasting wall hanging or quilt.
How
can you be sure you are getting a fair price?
You may find cheaper prices available, so when considering which business to use,
here are a few questions to ask:
- Do you back each T-shirt square with a good quality interfacing to make sure they
don’t
lose their shape? (Many makers just sew the squares together. They look fine
at first, but
in no time, the shirts are all stretched out and cause gaps in the
quilt.) - Do you allow me to custom select my fabric? (Many makers say they provide the fabric.
You may have some say in what they use, but you are at risk for them purchasing cheap
fabric with a very loose weave that may fall apart after a few washings. Fabrics
can be
purchased at discount stores for as cheap as $2.00 per yard. They are usually
loosely
woven, almost see-through, and don’t last very long. Although I’ll gladly
use any cotton
fabric you select, I prefer that you choose 100 percent cotton from
a reputable fabric or
quilt store. Even 100 percent cotton fabric can be poorly made,
so watch the quality. ) - Do you provide personal consultation and discussion? (Some makers simply want you
to
fill out a checklist and leave them alone to do the work. Making a profit, for
them, depends
on them getting your order with as little time as possible spent on
the customer. I am
happy to personally consult with you. Under some circumstances,
I can meet customers
locally at nearby fabric stores to help with fabric selection.) - Do you put a binding on the quilt, or just stitch up the edges right sides together
and then
turn the quilt inside out? (I’ve seen some real quick and dirty quilts put
together this way—
the maker ties them at each square to hold the quilt together,
then sews up the sides. No
quilting involved.) - Just what kind of quilting will you do? (Will they be using a professional longarm
quilting
machine to do a professional all-over quilting design of your choosing,
or will they use a
regular sewing machine without a stitch regulator. Just how much
quilting will they do for
the price?)
Do we ship T-shirt quilts? Sure. You send us your T-shirts, backing, border, sashing
and
binding fabric and we’ll charge actual shipping plus a $5.00 handling charge.
We ship via UPS or
priority mail via USPS depending on best prices and your preferences.
Shipping cost can be
predetermined as part of our pricing and included in our purchase
agreement, to avoid any
unhappy surprises.
How do you pay? Payment must be made prior
to delivery of the quilt. You may pay with a
money order or personal check. We also
accept and prefer payment through PAYPAL via your
credit card or other authorized
payment mechanisms. PAYPAL is a secure, reliable service that
we have used as buyers
and sellers for years. You pay nothing to sign up for PAY PAL. See
